Even 35 years after reunification, the discussion about East Germany remains topical. The feeling of inequality and lack of recognition is still present for many people in the new federal states, despite considerable progress in the equalization of living conditions.

East German politician Mario Czaja provides answers and solutions in his book 'Wie der Osten Deutschland rettet: Lösungen für ein neues Miteinander', published in 2024. He shows how a self-determined, democratic and economically strong East Germany can be promoted. Czaja calls for eastern Germany to be seen as an independent region with special needs and potential. He emphasizes the need for more proximity to citizens and co-determination, especially in the new federal states, and provides practical insights into how politics can be changed through direct citizen participation.
